In truth, I can’t remember when I wasn’t an artist.
At three years old, I was already drawing and painting. At the time, I decided paper wasn’t enough and drew on the living room wall—my first mural. It was so detailed that my mother tried to rip the wallpaper off the wall to frame it because she was so impressed (she was my first fan).
So when my parents announced that I would become an artist, naturally I believed them. Who was I to argue? I already thought I was an artist.
For the past seven decades I have spent my life exploring all aspects of the art world. I have worked as a graphic artist, artist in residence, high school art teacher, and fine artist. I have created with watercolor… oil… acrylic… pen and ink… pastels… charcoal… ceramics…even jewelry design for awhile.
With each new medium, I’ve discovered a bit more about myself. What is the most important thing in my life? What’s worth saying visually? Of course, it’s changed many times in as many years as I’ve been “practicing” my craft.
Most recently, I’ve started focusing on portraits. The human form, specifically the human face—it’s a canvas of emotion already. I’m still fascinated by how a single look can betray a person’s whole story. Strangely, I never think I capture it just right. But then, as I paint, I slowly see that look appear again on my canvas. I relish in the moment when I can see that face that deserves to be studied, cataloged and remembered appear on canvas.
I hope you feel the same when you see my work.
